Social Science Education

PLEASE NOTE: If you will be a senior starting in the Fall of 2023, you should complete the Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science: Social Science Education major according to its current description. All others should plan to move to the History: Social Studies Education major, which will have some new requirements, specifically for the required Teacher Education courses.  Please see an advisor in the IDS major, or in the History major, for details.

Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science Education is a unique program that allows students that are interested in teaching multiple subjects within social studies to become certified to do so. This program works in conjunction with the College of Education and requires secondary admission to the College of Education. Upon acceptance, students will complete student teaching experiences and complete teacher education coursework that will align with their core major coursework in the College of Social Science.

Typically, students will apply to the College of Education during their sophomore year at MSU. There are separate application requirements required by the College of Education that you can find on the College of Education's website

For more information on the courses that are required for this program, please see the Social Science Education Degree Checklist!

If you are interested in learning more about the major and if it's the right fit for you, please schedule an appointment with an advisor in our office.
